About Us

ashgrove vets aberdeen

Ashgrove Vets is a fiercely independent small animal practice. We are spread over 3 sites in the city centre and on the outskirts of Aberdeen. Ashgrove is owned by husband and wife team Kevin and Clare Barclay. Since 2007 Kevin has been a Veterinary Surgeon in the practice and Clare joined him in the business not long after as a vet nurse and currently as insurance administrator! We have tried to surround ourselves with the best team we could ever ask for. Our vision is to provide high quality, affordable veterinary care for the pets of Aberdeen and surrounding areas. This means treating animals in gold standard fashion whilst still offering a cost-effective solution for those on a lower budget.

Since taking over the reigns Kevin and Clare have slowly expanded Ashgrove. As well as the Belmont Road branch we are now have our surgery in Peterculter (opened 2019), and have recently added to Ashgrove by opening the Portlethen surgery in late 2024.

2025 is an exciting year with the development of our next surgery in Peterculter. At the site of the old TSB bank (2 doors down from the current surgery) we will open our new expanded Peterculter surgery. This should allow us capacity to keep providing the best care for all our clients and even expand our offering.

History of the Ashgrove Veterinary Centre

1940

Ashgrove’s history can be traced back as far as 1940. The practice was initially set up at 34 Ashgrove Road by George Watson Argo MRCVS . He had previously worked as a veterinary assistant to William Hepburn at Ship Lane in Aberdeen when working horses were based around the docks.

1953

Mr Argo moved to Ashgrove Road and set up his own practice to be near the farmers auction markets at Kittybrewster. The practice then moved along Ashgrove Road to Lilybank, before in 1953 finally moving to the current location at 10 Belmont Road. The practice has been here ever since.

1962

In 1962 Mr Argo was joined by Hugh Kay MRCVS, who was well known in the local area as the TV vet. In those days the practice dealt with a wide range of farm, equine and small animal patients. However in 1984 following the closure of the local auction markets the decision was taken to concentrate on domestic pets.

1990

In 1990 Jeremy Hopkins MRCVS returned to the UK from South Africa and bought Ashgrove. Since then he has spent a lot of time modernising the practice and building up a very loyal client base. Under his leadership Ashgrove has gone from strength to strength, and in 2009 he was joined by Kevin Barclay MRCVS.

Jeremy announced his official retirement at the end of August 2016 when he handed the reigns over to Kevin Barclay MRCVS.

The practice now has a team of seven veterinary surgeons, six fully qualified Registered Veterinary nurses and a small team of receptionists and support staff. We are a Royal College Approved practice and a nurse training practice.

The practice aims to provide the best service possible to all of our clients and prides itself on providing preventative health care for all domestic pets as well as extensive surgical facilities for both routine and emergency cases. We treat all domestic pets (including exotics) and look forward to seeing both current and new clients in the practice.
