Team Ashgrove Takes on Ben Nevis: Climbing for Mental Health in Veterinary Medicine

The Challenge Ahead

This summer, Team Ashgrove is taking on an ambitious challenge for a cause close to our hearts. We will be scaling Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, standing at an impressive 1,345 meters (4,413 feet) above sea level. Our team will embark early in the morning, facing a rigorous day-long hike that will test both our physical endurance and mental resilience.

The path to the summit is demanding, covering roughly 10.5 miles round trip with steep, rocky terrain and unpredictable Scottish weather conditions. While thousands attempt this climb annually, it remains a formidable challenge that requires proper preparation, equipment, and determination.

Why We’re Climbing: The Canmore Trust

Our expedition supports The Canmore Trust, an organisation dedicated to the critical work of supporting mental health and well-being for those affected by suicide. Their comprehensive approach includes:

  • Suicide prevention and postvention within communities
  • Educational initiatives raising awareness about mental health challenges
  • Research partnerships to identify risk factors contributing to suicide
  • Family support to help rebuild lives after experiencing such devastating loss

The Canmore Trust works tirelessly to break the stigma surrounding mental health discussions and provides resources for those in crisis as well as their loved ones.

Mental Health in Veterinary Medicine: A Growing Crisis

For Team Ashgrove, this cause resonates deeply with our professional experiences. Mental health challenges have reached critical levels within the veterinary profession. The statistics paint a sobering picture:

  • Veterinary professionals are up to 4 times more likely to die by suicide compared to the general population
  • Nearly 9 out of 10 veterinarians report experiencing job stress
  • A significant percentage battle burnout, compassion fatigue, and depression

The demanding nature of veterinary work creates a perfect storm of risk factors:

  • Emotionally charged work environments
  • Long, irregular hours
  • High-pressure medical decisions
  • Significant student debt
  • Access to lethal medications
  • Perfectionist personality traits common in the field

A Personal Connection

A tragedy within our own community cemented our decision to support The Canmore Trust. Last year, we lost a talented and respected veterinary student to suicide. This bright, compassionate individual had a promising future ahead, making the loss devastating for colleagues, friends, and family.

The Canmore Trust was established under similar circumstances, making it a particularly meaningful organization for our fundraising efforts. Our climb honors the memory of our colleague and acknowledges all those in our profession who struggle silently with mental health challenges.
